DOCTOR JOSEPH L. DRISCOLL PRESIDENT

The college years for the members of the class of 1967 have contained many periods of
extraordinary challenge. This is true, in large measure, due to the fact that your attendance
at SMTI coincided with many of the major events and crises which are an inherent part of
the transition the Institution has been and still moving through. To your class, as well
as the few classes preceding and following it, this has meant confrontation with difficul-
ties and inconveniences not usually a part of the academic world's regular pattern. The
manner in which the members of the class of 1967 accepted these unusual obstacles and
faced and overcame them should forever be to all of you a prideful memory.

As is the case in all human endeavor, when individuals or groups are challenged by
extraordinary difficulties and meet those challenges successfully, they are the better and
the stronger for the experience. The many contributions the members of the class of 1967
have made to the successful development of SMTI will long be remembered by me per-
sonally and by all of my colleagues on the faculty.

In extending this message of congratulations to you on the successful completion of
your program of studies, I want you to know that I have great confidence in your future,
a confidence based on how splendidly you met your responsibilities during the past four
years of campus life.

Mr. Paul Rudolph

DEDICATION

Since moving on to its new campus, SMTI has been catapulted
into national prominence. The attention has centered upon the
unique design for the SMTI complex at North Dartmouth; a de-
sign that generates energy, excitement, and new educational
horizons. The entire credit for the design of this educational
complex, which heralds a new day for public higher education
in Southeastern Massachusetts, rests with Mr. Paul Rudolph.

It seems fitting, therefore, that this first edition of the SCRIM-
SHAW be dedicated to Mr. Paul Rudolph, architect and design-
er of Southeastern Massachusetts Technological Institute. He has
set us a standard of excellence; may we always remain true to
this ideal.

Professor Louis S. J. Simeone, "Louie" to friends and a generation of students, is in
the midst of an illustrious career at S.M.T.I. Joining the faculty of Bradford Durfee Tex-
tile School in 1946, he was the founder of the independent Mathematics Department. He
received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics from Northeastern University in
1945, and a Master of Arts Degree in Mathematics from Boston University in 1951.

Through the years, his kindly patience and his delightfully sly wit have become legend-
ary. Able to make the most abstract mathematical ideas not only meaningful but also
interesting to the students, he has such a sure grasp of his subject matter he can state
difficult concepts simply and directly — the surest stamp of a great teacher.

Professor Simeone is in the forefront of extra-curricular activity at S.M.T.I. He was
the founder of the Cosmopolitan Club for foreign students, he was one of the founders
and a long-time adviser of the Mathematics Club. He is always available to individual stu-
dents for advice and direction. He was among the very first to support the consolidation
of Bradford Durfee College of Technology and New Bedford Institute of Technology and
has been an active supporter of the development of Southeastern Massachusetts Technolog-
ical Institute.

Intellectually gifted, a charming gentleman, a sure- adviser, and a great teacher, Profes-
sor Louis S. J. Simeone is indeed a "man for all seasons."

WORDS OF APPRECIATION AND THANKS

by Glenn D. Lincoln Preston

We find it almost impossible to express our thanks for the
wonderful experience that we have had this first academic year
at the North Dartmouth campus.

The time that we have spent studying here has been of great
value to us because we have gained knowledge and experience
that to us is priceless. We thank you all for being such a great
part of it.

We have learned about your way of life: the manner in which
you think, act, and persevere. We have learned to adjust to our
new environment, which we would not have been able to do
but for the hospitality, friendship, and courtesy of all of you
with whom we spent most of our time.

To our teachers, our advisors, our faculty friends, and all of
our fellow students, especially our classmates, sincere thanks for
this memorable year.

Sincerely,

Glenn D. L. Preston

GENTLE THURSDAY— MAY 4.

GENTLE THURSDAY is an affirmation of the idea that there is nothing wrong and a great
deal that is right with a little fun. Frivolous fun ? Irresponsible and fun ? A breakdown of the
customary barriers that separate us all? An attempt to destructure ? . .. YEAH!

We want to create a time for relaxation, for an expression of our common humanity, for
gentle peeling off of layers and layers of those thick plastic shells in which we all seem to exist
. . . self-centered, introverted, structured, and dehumanized; those shells that separate faculty
from students, students from students, department from department, ourselves from ourselves —

We affirm the power of that forbidden word, LOVE, with all its dissembling effects, its radi-
cal thrust into the heart of all that binds us, its stripping power that leaves us open and un-
protected, unable to resist involvement with other human beings, even strangers (but there will
be no stranger on GENTLE THURSDAY.)

Move then, on GENTLE THURSDAY, "as the spirit moves you ..." dress as you like,
colorfully and casually, or in suits and ties.

Bring your family, friends and pets to school.

Bring blankets and picnic lunches, with maybe some extra sandwiches for the Art Majors.

Your professors may hold classes out of doors — perhaps forgoing their subject matter in
favor of discussing Love and Gentleness. How they have seemed to slip away from us. (Does
the very thought of talking about love embarrass you ? does it tighten your insides ? All the more
reason to do it!)

Bring musical instruments; clarinets, flutes, guitars, violins, kazoos — it's all right if you really
can't play well.

Bring your "selves" and your smiles and leave your tensions at home for one day.

There will be kites and color and lollipops and music. On GENTLE THURSDAY it will
be alright to talk to the Chem. Dept.

And if GENTLE THURSDAY is a success, maybe we'll have another one again some-
time. And then maybe someday we will have GENTLE THURSDAY every day.

And then the revolution will be here !

Products are of no value unless the consumer is
made aware of their existence. This is the purpose
of advertising: to convincingly present a commodity
to the public. As the business cycle revolves, ad-
vertising fulfills its role as the spokesman of in-
dustry. Advertisers deal in the abstract-words and
images — to represent the concrete — goods and ser-
vices — realizing that man is controlled through his
thoughts and that it is to this realm that they must
appeal.

EDITOR'S ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The editorship of the 1967 Scrimshaw was one of the most difficult assign-
ments I have ever undertaken. The cause for this difficulty was due to a lack
of cooperation of the student body to take an active interest in this year's
yearbook. The lack of faculty assistance also made the task much harder.
To the people that did take an active part in making this yearbook a reality,
and who helped me so much whenever I needed help, a sincere thank-you.

Thanks to;

JOHN GAGNON, layout editor, who so ably handled layouts and many
other things that needed attention. The time he devoted to the Scrimshaw was
far beyond what could be expected of most people.

WILL ST. ONGE and DICK PLOUFFE, photographers, for their first time
and effort taking and developing photos. The darkroom served as a second
home for these two during the past year. Again, my sincere thanks.

Celeste Baptiste, one of the most faithful and time giving people on the
Scrimshaw staff. Celeste took upon herself the task of laying out the faculty
index and the senior layout. Working many long and tiring hours, she is to
be congratulated for an excellent job.

Many thanks to Dean Donald C. Howard and Dean Mary Louise Walsh for
their undying assistance in helping in the publication of this book.

Acknowledgement is also made to two members of the SMTI English De-
partment: Doctor Marie Ahearn and Doctor Walter Cass for their encourage-
ment concerning our literary strife.

It was a great sacrifice on the part of these four people in assisting me in
this almost impossible task. I am privileged to have worked with these "good
friends" — the experience has been very rewarding.

John R. Ledwidge
